The FAITH Garden program is in line with the Health Program of the company in collaboration with the Department of Health in their annual celebration of the Nutrition Month. As had been assessed, there is a weight on malnutrition of children in Didipio. FAITH which means “Food Always In The Home” aims to introduce vegetable production through backyard gardening and later on moves to a wider scope, commercial production when people are willing, able and ready to participate in this program. The launching program started with the schools and OGPI employees as partners to start the program.

Activities of the seminar includes nutrition talk by OGPI clinic staff Mary Bajita. Proper food intake for the body on fruits and vegetables was discussed. Mike Serafica and Monico Baustista from the Allied Botanical Enterprize who were invited by OGPI conducted the seminar on vegetable production and soil testing. Vegetable production includes correct way of planting, season to plant , fertilization and harvest techniques to prolong lifespan of plants. Common nutritious vegetables for the table and can easily be grown in due time, any where were presented. After the lecture, actual demo on proper seeding and soil testing was done in the OGPI nursery.

The nineteen participants were thankful for this seminar because they learned a lot. Though some of the participants have been planting some vegetables, they accepted that they have been doing the wrong process. Through this seminar, everyone was challenged and inspired to do backyard gardening. Some are even planning to do large scale gardening with the knowledge learned.

Lucita Exconde explained to the participants that OGPI wants to promote this program. In this regard, vegetable seeds were purchased ready for those who have ready areas to be planted. In addition, a vegetable nursery will be established where seedlings will be grown ready for distribution to ready and able planters. The Didipio Green Valley Institute who says they are ready will be the first recipients of vegetable seeds and seedlings.

OceanaGold provides financial aid to Vizcaya residents
(The Philippine Star) Updated October 05, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - OceanaGold (Philippines), Inc. is sponsoring community health programs in the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino by providing financial and medical assistance to the residents especially those in the remote areas, according to an official of the mining firm.

The programs are being held in partnership with the rural health units of Kasibu and Cabarroguis, barangay and local government officials and community volunteers.

OceanaGold’s recent medical missions were held between May and September this year, the most recent of which was in the town of Alfonso Castaneda, Nueva Vizcaya, jointly sponsored by Rep. Carlos Padilla and local barangay officials. Over 1,500 residents from the six communities were given medical check-ups, free medicine and reading glasses.

OceanaGold is currently developing the Didipio gold-copper project in the Nueva Vizcaya-Quirino provinces.

Ramoncito Gozar, OceanaGold vice president for communications and external affairs, said “access to medical care is one of the core needs of the people of Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino provinces particularly those in remote areas.”

OceanaGold, he said, “is proud to work with our local partners to bring free medicine to the people, and to be involved on many other programs especially in the areas of health and medicine, clean water, education, reforestation and environment and infrastructure

ITOGON, BENGUET MEDICAL MISSION FOR THE VICTIMS OF TYPHOON PEPENG
OCTOBER 15, 2009

Bua Training Center at Itogon, Benguet is the site of an evacuation center for the victims of the big landslide at Luneta Hill and surrounding areas within the Municipality of Itogon, Benguet.

The total number of families affected by the landslide was 88. About 69 families lost their homes and their source of livelihood. Most of these families were formerly employed by the mining company that operated in Itogon. Most of these are still engaged in small scale mining activities.

Partners in the Medical Mission

Benguet Provincial Health Office:

A team of 18 medical professionals including doctors, dentists, nurses and medical technologists headed by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Esteban Piok

Itogon Municipal Health Office:

A team of twelve (12) medical professionals headed by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Oliver Guadania

The Medical – Dental Mission

OceanaGold initiated the medical mission in partnership with the Provincial and Municipal Health Offices of the province of Itogon, Benguet.

The health offices were very thankful of this initiative as most of the assistance given to the typhoon victims did not include medicines.

The Provincial and Municipal Health Offices mobilized all their available staff even on short notice. It so happened that several MHOs from other municipalities were stranded in Baguio and La Trinidad Benguet so when called upon by their Provincial head they readily responded.

The Department of Health and Provincial Health Office took this opportunity to bring their services to the people. These included laboratory services such as urinalysis and total blood counts.

Distribution of vitamins to children was likewise done by representatives of the Department of Health.

Jollibee Foods Corporation brought their mascot to entertain the children (Oct 14) and provided some of the meals for the medical mission team.

This mission provided OceanaGold the opportunity to network with other entities who share the company's commitment to help people.

MINING FIRM PROVIDES HEALTH CARE TO VILLAGES

Mining firm provides health care to villages

DIADI, Nueva Vizcaya—After crossing borders to provide assistance to victims of typhoons that hit Northern Luzon recently, OceanaGold Philippines Inc. (OGPI) the ensuing day conducted another medical mission in this hilly town.

Spearheaded by community-relations manager Jun Floresca of OGPI’s exploration division, a team of doctors, dentists, nurses and social workers from the municipal hall launched a comprehensive medical and dental mission in the upland villages of PiƱa and Langka.

Carrying free medicine provided by the mining firm, the mission conducted free medical consultations and dental services to the residents of the two villages who came in truckloads.

Diadi Mayor Marivic Padilla lauded what he described as a timely medical undertaking served for free in the impoverished villages.

“We are thankful that OceanaGold sponsored a medical mission that immediately addressed health-related concerns in the area. The free medicine that could not be produced by the local government for lack of funds provided substantial and long-lasting relief for our constituents,” he said.

Late last month, OGPI vice president for communications and external affairs Chito Gozar led a medical mission for local residents of Itogon, Benguet, in the Cordillera region. That mission took care of 209 medical and 27 dental cases.

“As part of our commitment to the people of Luzon, we undertook our very successful medical mission across borders and beyond the immediate region where we operate,” said Gozar.

Early this month, OGPI environment and safety manager Lucy Exconde launched her medical mission for the senior citizens of Kasibu, the host town of the Didipio gold-copper project. It was organized by the Kasibu rural health unit in celebration of Elderly Week.

As a major sponsor, OGPI dubbed the occasion as “Handog para kay Lolo at Lola [In Honor of Grandpa and Grandma].” Medicines, vitamins and reading glasses were distributed to around 300 senior citizens from the different barangays of Kasibu.

Senior Citizen Federation president Clarita Tinoyan expressed gratitude to OGPI for sponsoring the mission.

“The assistance extended by the company is a great help to my fellow senior citizens whose health and eyesight are beginning to weaken,” Tinoyan said.

During the observance of Nutrition Month, the mining company also sponsored a municipal-wide medical mission and health awareness showdown among students and local officials of the town.
