Handicapped Residents of Didipio Valley Used to Keep Oceanagold's Vegetable Nursery

An ‘organic’ vegetable nursery was previously maintained by handicapped residents of Barangay Didipio in Nueva Vizcaya.

It provides employment to handicapped residents of Brgy. Didipio and augments the demand of vegetables in the valley.

Introduced in August 2003, the vegetable seeds are purchased by Oceanagold Philippines, Inc. and raised at Oceanagold's ‘organic’ vegetable nursery for free distribution to the community.

“Didipio residents do not want to buy vegetables in the lowlands because they are not organically raised” said Miguel Tumitit (man in the picture who used to work for Oceanagold).

More than 60,000 vegetable seedlings were distributed to the Didipio residents since the start of the project. They include pechay, cabbage, sili, eggplant tomato, mustard and Chinese pechay.

The community is very supportive of the ‘organic’ vegetable nursery and encourages their neighboring Barangays to start their own ‘organic’ vegetable nursery.

The "free vegetable seedling" program should have a comeback including the hiring of handicapped to tend to Oceanagold's vegetable nursery.

Didipio Project Touching Lives: Didipio Community

In the Community - Philippines, By Arnel Arrojo

In the Philippines there are a number of key initiatives and projects both the company and staff undertake. Some of these are:

• Tree planting under the “Trees for Life” program, where the Department of Environment and Natural Resources aim to plant 20 million trees nationwide.

• Team building seminars for OceanaGold staff on working harmoniously and efficiently.

• Basic training on journalism and photography, which is intended to develop the hidden talents of OceanaGold staff and the community and establish a community newsletter.

• Medical Dental Mission in collaboration with the Philippine Army, Department of Health and Local Government Units.

• First aid and Emergency Preparedness Drills for the staff and community. One of the most recently celebrated initiatives held in the Philippines is Nutrition Month which occurs in July. Nutrition Month was created under Presidential Decree (P.D. No. 491 June 25, 1974) and is today managed by the Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC) of Kasibu and chaired by Dr. Elizabeth Joaquin of the Municipal Health Unit. The aim of the initiative is to raise funds for the feeding program of MNC for the indigent daycare children of selected barangays in Kasibu.

As in previous years, OceanaGold and some of its contractors ( Drillcorp, CCF and New Life Constructions) contributed to the fund-raining campaign. Our Philippine staff also joined the parade and took part in the month’s celebrations which brought a lot of colour and fun to the town.

The Didipio Green Valley Institute, a community high school which OceanaGold helped establish, marked the occasion by holding various contests on nutrition.

This included writing posters and essays and preparing healthy foods. Some of our staff had the pleasure of tasting the foods prepared by the students and were very impressed, definitely a few cooks and chefs in the making!
